Central Balkan National Park

Central Balkan National Park is one of Bulgaria’s three national parks, located in the highest parts of the Balkan Mountains. Established in 1991, it is one of Europe’s most significant protected areas, renowned for its ancient forests, rich biodiversity, and spectacular mountain landscapes.

Main Natural Attractions

The park covers an area of approximately 720 km² and includes Mount Botev, the highest peak in the Balkan Mountains, as well as Raysko Praskalo, the highest permanent waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. The landscape combines alpine meadows, steep rock faces, deep canyons, centuries-old beech forests, and numerous mountain rivers.

Nature Conservation

Nine strict nature reserves are located within the park, including Dzhendema, Steneto, and Kozya Stena. They protect habitats of brown bears, wolves, chamois, golden eagles, and hundreds of rare plant species. Some of the park’s ancient beech forests are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tourism and Experiences

Central Balkan National Park offers an extensive network of marked hiking trails, mountain huts, and scenic routes. Popular hikes lead to Mount Botev, Raysko Praskalo, and the nature reserves, although access to certain areas may be temporarily restricted.
